Bible Study Lesson 8                              The Feast of Trumpets                                Febuary 19/1996

The Feast of Trumpets is another important Holy Day. You will see why the blowing of trumpets is and was so important in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, and in the future to come. We will start in the Old Testament.

Leviticus. 23 : 23 - 25. Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a Sabbath rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.

Exodus. 19 : 16 - 19. Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning that there were thundering and lightning's, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain .

Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke , and God answered him by voice.

Numbers. 10 : 1 - 10. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for calling the assembly and for directing the movement of the camps.

When they blow both of them, all the assembly shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. But if they blow only one, then the leaders , the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call of them to begin their journeys.

And when the congregation is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but not sound the advance. The sons of Aaron, the priest, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations. When you go to war in your land against the enemy who oppresses you,  then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.

Also in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be a memorial for you before your God; I am the Lord your God.

Psalm. 81 : 3 . Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon, At the full moon, on our solemn feast day.

Isaiah. 27 : 12 - 13. And it shall come to pass in that day the Lord will thresh, From the channel of the River to the Brook of Egypt; And you will be gathered one by one, O you children of Israel. So it shall be in that day that the great trumpet will be blown; They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, And shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

Jeremiah. 4 : 5. Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: Blow the trumpet in the land; Cry, Gather together, And say, Assemble yourselves , And let us go into the fortified cities.

Ezekiel. 33 : 1 - 6. Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman, when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people, then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life.

Joel. 2 : 1, 15. Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain ! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the Lord is coming, For it is at hand. ( 15 ) Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly.

Now I will show you how blowing of trumpets effects the New Testament Church.

1 Corinthians. 15 : 50 - 52. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep , but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible , and we shall be changed.

1 Thessalonians. 4 : 16. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Now to show you that there is a future significance to the Feast of Trumpets.

Revelation. 8: 1 - 13. When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. And he was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel's hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thundering, lightening, and an earthquake.  So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. Then the second angel sounded: ANd something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood; and a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Then the third angel sounded, And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of the water; and the  name of the star is Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood; and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, So that a third of them were darkened; and a third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night. And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound !

Revelation. 9 : 1 , 13 . The fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. And to him was given the key to the bottomless pit. ( 13 ) Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God.

Revelation. 11 : 15. Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, The kingdom of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever !

So as you can see that the sounding of Trumpets was used in many different ways. In a Christians life it is essential that we observe the Feast of Trumpets to remind us of what was, and what is to come .

Are you blowing a trumpet of witness and warning ?

Do you hear a trumpet sounding ?

You are responsible for what you read !

May the Father & Jesus Christ be with you always
